I’m out of shape.
It happened slowly over time. I have lots of good excuses (SERIOUSLY! I got hit by a car and had to have major surgeries!), but that doesn’t change the fact that every time I see an out-of-order escalator, I’d rather curl up in a ball and cry than walk up the stairs.
So, when I heard that my friend and his business partner were opening up Jade Fitness, I felt inspired to commit myself to turning things around. Matt and I are recently engaged, and I figured now would be a great time to do something about my physical fitness. Plus, it’s right down the street from me.
I’ve offered to share my experience of going from completely out of shape to hopefully leading a healthier lifestyle. And to my surprise and delight, Matt agreed to do it with me!
We met with Drew, our trainer and management team member, last night for our assessment. It wasn’t pretty. Both of us got “F’s” on our planks. But hey, you gotta start somewhere – why not the very bottom?
Here’s the plan.
We’ll work out with Drew twice a week at Jade, and then we have homework (ugh!). Matt said he will hold me to my homework because that’s something I’ve let slip in the past when I’ve done physical therapy. Three times a week outside of the gym we’ll do a list of basic exercises on our own. Seems manageable. Matt and I will be updating here about our experience.
Drew’s tip of the week regarding nutrition: cut out the complex carbs at dinnertime. That might be more difficult than the homework, but again seems manageable.
We took baseline weights and measurements last night and we will benchmark those every two weeks to keep up to date on progress as we approach our wedding (AND NO WE HAVE NOT PICKED A DATE YET!). The goal here is not some kind of “Wedding Weight Loss Challenge” so I look good in a dress. It’s not really about weight loss at all, though that will hopefully be a nice perk.
Starting the rest of our lives together as healthier people is one of the kindest gifts I think we can give each other.
